What is a Grease Trap?
Put simply, a grease trap is a device that kitchen wastewater flows through before it enters the sewer system. It acts as a filter or separator for fats, oil and grease (FOG) that is present in the kitchen wastewater.
If required, there are also units that can separate food particles from kitchen effluent. Depending on the type of situation and the size of the kitchen there are a wide range of grease trapping devices that can be installed in your premises.
How does a Grease Trap work?
Kitchen wastewater (containing FOG) enters the grease trap. As grease has a lower density than water, usually 10-15%, it is unable to mix with the water and so rises to the surface. This occurs due to a system of baffles.
A baffle is a wall inside the grease trap that slows down and controls the flow of water. The grease then fills the trap from the top down and the grease-free water exits under the final baffle wall to the main sewer drain.
Why do I need a grease trap?
You may require a grease trap for a number of reasons. Firstly, your local water company or authority may require you to have one installed, or you may have a blockage in the sewer line. This is due to the fact that solidified grease (grease solidifies at normal room temperatures) can cause major blockages in the main sewer lines. These can then cause sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs).
If this happens the process of solving the sewer overflow requires large amounts of money and manpower, which the water company can back charge to the offending food service establishment. It is therefore highly advisable that you install a grease trap in order to stop any problems occurring.
Here at Aqua Mundus, we supply an array of grease traps for virtually every grease waste removal issue. The company has expertise in providing the perfect solution for any kind of waste drainage problem. We can provide services for all types of sites ranging from new build, building conversions to existing food service establishments.
These traps are available for internal and external uses. They are installed next to the sink/equipment within the kitchen area. Larger traps can be centrally located within the plant to take the wastewater from the entire kitchen. Above ground traps can be automatic grease removal units that self-clean or passive ones which require more maintenance.
Grease Traps installed below ground have an access cover that permits easy access to the unit for maintenance. They can be installed externally, but also can be fitted within a building, provided they are fitted with a substantial airtight lid to prevent any odour. There are a variety of below ground traps, including super-capacity and biological units. Grease Traps installed below ground can also trap food waste sediment and sludge deposits that become separated from the contaminated water. These can then be removed using a vacuum tanker.
